Feed-in tariffs across most Australian states now pay somewhere between 3 and 6 cents per kilowatt-hour. Your energy retailer then charges 28 to 34 cents to sell it back to you. So if your solar system is exporting power during the day, only for you to buy it back at night, you’re effectively losing money on every kilowatt your panels produce.

What Is the Sungrow Battery Range?
We’ve installed Sungrow equipment on Australian rooftops since the brand entered this market in 2012. They’re a Chinese brand, but their local support office is just based in Sydney, so the installer network is fairly well-established.
Now, Sungrow offers two main residential battery series in Australia. There’s the SBR, which is a modular LFP system that ranges from 6.4 kWh to 25.6 kWh, and then there’s the more expensive, next-generation version, the SBH. The latter ranges from 20 kWh to 40 kWh. Either way, both use LFP chemistry and give you a 10-year warranty.
You’d be getting access to their whole Sungrow ecosystem, too, since their batteries and inverters are designed to work together. What this offers is monitoring and performance benefits via the iSolarCloud app – but it also means Sungrow batteries are DC-coupled and require a Sungrow hybrid inverter. So you are essentially locked in if you go down this route.
But both the SBR and SBH series are on the Clean Energy Council Approved Products List, which makes them eligible for the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate.

Which one’s best for your situation, then?
We’d suggest going for the SBR if you’ve already got an existing Sungrow SH-RS or SH-RT inverter and plan on starting small and maybe expanding later. It’s also good if you just want flexible sizing, since it ranges between 6.4 kWh and 25.6 kWh. We like the modular design, too, so you can always add 3.2 kWh at a time if you need a bit more later on.
As mentioned, the SBH is the more premium series of the two, so you’d be better off with this one if you have a three-phase property, for instance, or if you need 20 kWh or more from day one. You could use it for running high-load appliances like ducted HVAC or an EV charger. The SBH’s 50A charge/discharge capacity is just significantly better suited to rapid energy cycling than the SBR.
Fortunately, there is a bit of a sweet spot you can hit by going for the SBR128 sweet spot: the 12.8 kWh SBR128 is one of the most commonly installed Sungrow batteries in Australia. It covers overnight demand for a three to five-person household and gives you quite strong value per kWh after the federal rebate.

So, those are the two main series, but what sort of features can you expect with either of them?

Case Study: SBR128 in Adelaide
Seeing as though it’s the most popular, let’s see what the SBR128 could look like in practice with an example.
Say, James, has had a 6.6 kW solar system on his Adelaide roof since 2021 – it’s generated well during the day, but still running up a bill by buying power back at night at 30c/kWh. Trade-Offs to Know Before You Buy:

- Floor/Ground-Mounted Only: Both the SBR and SBH require floor space

- Warranty Throughput Cap: Heavy use – daily VPP cycling, for instance – can reach the kWh throughput limit before the 10-year period ends. Read the warranty terms and model your usage if you plan to participate in a VPP programme.
- 10-Year Warranty: Solid and standard for the category, but shorter than the 15-year warranty offered on some other products.
- Not AC-Coupled: Cannot be retrofitted to a non-Sungrow system without a full inverter replacement. No workaround!
None of these trade-offs are dealbreakers for most buyers – but inverter lock-in is the one that catches people off guard most often. If you’re already in the Sungrow ecosystem, you’ve not got anything to worry about.
How to Get the Best Sungrow Battery Price
Get at least three quotes from CEC-accredited installers. Sungrow has a large dealer network and prices can vary by up to 15-20% for identical systems.
- Check if you have an existing Sungrow inverter. Your installation cost drops quite significantly if you do, since you won’t need an inverter replacement.
- Confirm the rebate is being applied upfront. Your accredited installer should deduct the Cheaper Home Batteries rebate directly from your invoice – not post-install.
- Ask about blackout protection configuration. It is not always included as standard. If it matters to you, get it confirmed in writing on the quote.
- Ask about VPP enrolment. Some installers will connect you to programmes that earn additional grid-balancing income. Worth asking before you finalise the quote.
- Time your purchase before the next STC adjustment. Ask your installer when the next rate change is expected – the current rebate is the highest it will be.
