Solar Power Battery Price Guide: Compare Costs, Brands & Savings 

The electricity you’re buying back from the grid at night costs 28-43 cents. Why waste the money? 

There are plenty of battery options out there, however, so we’ve put together this guide to break down the following:

What Affects the Price of a Solar Battery?

Two quotes for “a 10kWh battery” can differ by $3,000 or more. Why such a massive difference between the two? 

Capacity (kWh)

You want a battery that’s actually a good match for your evening and overnight usage. You might save more energy with a bigger battery, but you’ll pay it back far faster with a smaller one compared to an oversized system that never fully cycles.

Battery Chemistry

Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) is a lot safer than older NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) chemistry. Aside from that, it also just handles more charge cycles before degrading and is far more affordable these days. It should be a non-negotiable in any battery you’re interested in buying.

Brand and Warranty Tier

You’re not acquiescently buying premium just because it’s what’s available. It’s certainly not a waste of money, even though you’re looking to pay 20-40% more than mid-range alternatives. 

This is because you’re getting everything from longer warranties and stronger local support networks to more sophisticated software. Budget brands can still work alright, but you’re exposed to much higher long-term risk. Especially if the company isn’t well established in Australia.

Inverter Compatibility

Don’t already have a hybrid inverter? Unfortunately, you’re going to need to add around $1,500-$3,500 to your total. Some batteries include an inverter, but the majority of them need to have one added.  

Installation Complexity

Anything from cable run lengths and roof type to grid connection requirements all affect labour costs.

In general, the hardware-only cost is generally about 55-65% of your total installed price. The rest is labour, switchboard work (if needed) and electrical compliance. A switchboard upgrade, for instance, adds $800-$2,500.

The cost per kWh of usable storage is the most useful comparison metric here. Divide the total installed price by the usable kWh capacity. A decent benchmark is $750-$1,000/kWh installed after rebate. Anything above $1,100/kWh installed should be looked at a bit more carefully.

Fortunately, battery prices have fallen approximately 15-20% since 2023, since there’s been a global scale-up of LFP manufacturing, and we have cheaper raw material costs. That trend is expected to continue, but the reduction in government rebates definitely means the window for maximum savings is now.

Government Rebates and How They Affect Your Price

Following on from that previous point, the Cheaper Home Batteries Program launched on the 1st of July 2025 and gives you an upfront discount of approximately 30% on eligible battery installations across Australia. 

In practice, the government assigns a set number of STCs per kWh of usable battery capacity. Your installer then creates those certificates and sells them to electricity retailers before they pass that discount directly to you as a reduction on your invoice. So there isn’t any waiting or rebate chasing on your end – the savings appear upfront on your quote.

That said, this rebate changes every six months. It most recently changed in May 2026, and the rebate is now tiered by battery size:

  • 0-14 kWh of usable capacity: Full STC rate (100%)
  • 14-28 kWh: 60% of the full STC rate applies to capacity above 14 kWh
  • Above 28 kWh: Only 15% of the STC rate applies to capacity above 28 kWh

The full rebate still applies for most residential batteries under 14kWh. Based on the current STC factor of 6.8 and an STC market price of approximately $37 (after administration costs), the rebate is currently worth around $252 per usable kWh. So a 10kWh battery receives approximately $2,500 off the installed price!

The STC factor reduces again in January 2027 and every six months thereafter until the scheme closes in 2030. You’re wasting money by not acting as soon as possible here.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Battery must be CEC-approved and between 5kWh and 100kWh nominal capacity
  • Must be paired with an existing or new solar PV system
  • Must be installed by an SAA-accredited installer
  • One battery claim per property (per electricity meter)
  • No means testing – all households, businesses and community organisations qualify

Talk to a CEC-Accredited Volteam Installer About These Brands

Tesla Powerwall 3

This first one’s the most integrated residential battery system you can get in Australia. We like the built-in inverter it comes with that’s capable of handling the full solar array. This definitely simplifies the installation (which gives you a lower overall price) and some of the bulk.

Loads of batteries come with monitoring apps these days, and the Tesla Powerwall 3 has one of the more polished ones. The battery itself, at 13.5kWh, is about the size you’d want for a decent to large household, and you’ll get 10-year coverage with the warranty. 

You do, however, need a Tesla-certified installer network to get it installed, which can make it a bit more difficult if you were trying to shop around for the cheapest quote. And it’s right at the top of the residential range before installation costs at around $12,000-$15,000.

BYD Battery-Box HVS

BYD is actually one of the world’s largest battery manufacturers. The HVS series is modular, which starts at 5.1kWh and is expandable to 22.1kWh in increments. So this makes it handy for buyers who want to start smaller and expand later (for example, ahead of an EV purchase). 

We definitely appreciate the hardware pricing of $5,500-$13,000, which, as you can see, compared to the previous option, is quite a strong value for the capacity on offer. 

You will need a compatible hybrid inverter, though, so it’s best suited to new installations or homes with an existing compatible inverter.

Sungrow SBR HV

Sungrow has one of the lowest cost-per-kWh price points of any major brand in Australia – the 12.8kWh is probably their most popular battery, and it’s usually around $664-$820/kWh installed. 

The SBR series is solid. It’s modular and works with Sungrow’s own hybrid inverter range, which is also competitively priced. The limitation here would be that Sungrow carries slightly less residential brand recognition than Tesla or BYD in Australia. Even though they have a strong commercial track record globally.  

Alpha-ESS Smile B3+

Alpha-ESS is quite a well-rounded modular system here. Like a lot of the others, you’ll be getting a solid 10-year warranty and strong after-sales support. 

The B3+ starts at 5.7kWh and scales to 22.8kWh, which makes it a fairly flexible option for any house that doesn’t have the same capacity needs all year. The hardware pricing is good enough. Fairly competitive in the mid-range. 

Like Sungrow, though, it does have a bit less mainstream brand recognition than some of the top-tier names we covered before, so not every installer will be familiar with it.

Enphase IQ Battery 5P

Enphase is made for homes already running Enphase microinverters. You really have to commit to their ecosystem, but it is the only mainstream brand offering a 15-year battery warranty. 

For everyone else, the higher hardware cost ($6,500-$17,000) and relative inflexibility outside the Enphase ecosystem make it harder to justify the price. Again, that 15-year warranty is genuinely differentiated, though, since most competitors only cover 10 years.

Adding battery storage saves between $1,200 and $3,200 per year for most solar owners. Whether you land at the low or high end depends on three things: how much electricity you use, when you use it and what tariff you’re on.
