What the extra cost per connector buys

  • MULTILAM contact system, rated under 0.25 mΩ. The louvred band spreads the current across many contact points instead of a few, which is why the resistance figure holds instead of drifting.

Our insurer wanted proof the connectors we'd used were actually rated for the job before they'd sign off, and it turned out to be a non-issue because these carry the TÜV and cULus marks right there on the pack. Sent a photo through and that was that. One thing worth knowing before you order a box: you do need a proper crimping tool for these, pliers just won't do it, learned that the hard way on a different job.

Why pay more for Stäubli than a generic pack?

You’re paying for the contact, not the plastic. Inside a Stäubli connector is the MULTILAM contact system, which holds contact resistance to less than 0.25 mΩ and keeps holding it after 100 matings. That number is what stops a joint heating up over the years, and it’s the specification a budget copy can match on paper and not in a decade on a roof. Stäubli also invented MC4 and own the name, so a genuine part and a compatible one aren’t two versions of the same thing.

Will these join up to the connectors already on my panels?

Stäubli’s own instruction is to mate them with connectors from the MC4 family and with suitable cable. That’s the rule worth following, because a mated pair from two different makers is a joint neither manufacturer has tested, and it’s the connection nobody stands behind if it fails. If your panels arrived with genuine MC4 ends on them, these mate as intended. If you’re not sure what’s already up there, check before you order rather than after.

Do these MC4 connectors take both 4mm² and 6mm² cable?

Yes, both. The contact has a 5.8mm crimp opening that takes either cross-section, so you aren’t ordering a second box to finish one job. What you do need to check is the outside diameter of your cable’s insulation, which has to fall between 5.0 and 6.0mm for the gland to seal. Solar cable in 4mm² and 6mm² normally sits in that window, but double-sheathed or oversized cable might not.

What do I need to terminate them?

A proper crimping tool, and that’s not optional. These are crimp connectors, so the contact is compressed onto the conductor with a die sized for the job. Pliers will make something that looks finished and behaves like a resistor. You’ll also want the release tool for the shells. Beyond the tooling, wiring them into a live PV array is licensed electrical work, so if you’re building rather than maintaining, Volteam’s solar panel installation team can terminate and test the strings for you.

Are they weatherproof straight out of the box?

Not until they’re mated. A connected pair is sealed to IP68 and will sit under a metre of water for an hour, but an open connector is only IP2X, which protects fingers and nothing else. Stäubli are explicit that unmated connectors need capping to keep contamination out. So what you’re buying is a seal that only exists once both halves are home and locked. After that the working range runs -40°C to +85°C, which covers a roof cavity in a heatwave with plenty in hand.

Can I unplug them and use them again?

Up to a point, and the point is published. Stäubli rate the connector for 100 mating cycles, so disconnecting for a panel swap or an inverter change is well within what it’s built for. They won’t come apart by hand, though. The lock needs a release tool, which is deliberate, and it’s why a connector doesn’t separate when someone tugs a cable during a roof job. What you shouldn’t reuse is the crimp itself. Cut it back and fit a fresh contact.
