Will it handle panels facing two different directions?

Yes, and it’s the main reason to choose it. The Primo GEN24 has two MPP trackers rated at 22A and 12A, and each one finds the best operating point for the panels wired to it. Put eight panels north and six west, and the west group producing less in the morning has no effect on what the north group delivers. On a single-tracker inverter those two groups have to share one operating point, and the stronger string gives up output to the weaker one.

Where will the installer put it, and will we hear it?

It runs at 42 dB(A) at full output, which is quieter than normal conversation, so a garage wall or a wall shared with a living space is usually fine. The IP66 rating means an external wall is equally available, and the unit is rated from -40°C to +60°C, which covers a west-facing wall in full summer sun. At 15.38kg it goes onto a standard bracket without a second pair of hands. In practice the deciding factor turns out to be the cable run, not the noise.

Does a 5kW inverter limit how many panels I can fit?

The limits worth knowing are on the input side, not the output. The Primo GEN24 accepts up to 530V of PV input, with 22A available on the first tracker and 12A on the second, and it converts up to 5000 VA to 5000W of AC. Those three numbers decide how the strings get laid out and how much array the unit will accept. The string design is the document that shows how much array fits inside those three numbers, and it comes with the quote.

What does 97.6% efficiency actually get me?

A single peak figure tells you very little on its own, because an inverter almost never sits at its peak. The more useful set is the weighted figures across the operating range, and the Primo GEN24 reports 96.3% at 230 Vdc, 97.2% at 400 Vdc, and 96.7% at 530 Vdc. The point is that the curve stays flat. Output doesn’t fall away at the voltages a real array spends its day at, which is what separates a well-built unit from a spec sheet with one good number on it.

What happens to my solar if the grid goes out?

Be clear on this one before you buy. The Primo GEN24 includes a PV Point, which keeps a single dedicated socket live during a grid outage. That is one outlet, wired in specifically for the purpose. It’ll run a fridge or keep phones and laptops charged. It won’t run the house, and it isn’t a whole-home backup system. Worth knowing exactly which socket it is and where it sits, because during an outage that is the only outlet in the building still doing anything.

What drives the cost of a Fronius Primo GEN24 install?

It splits two ways, and which one you’re in matters more than anything on the spec sheet. On a new system the inverter is one line among the panels, the mounting, and the electrical work, and it’s rarely the line that moves the total. On a replacement, where the array is already on the roof and an older inverter has failed or is near the end of its life, most of that work is behind you and the job is a much shorter one. What decides a replacement job is the string layout, because an array wired for a single-tracker inverter may need re-stringing to use both of the Primo’s trackers properly.
