Solar Battery Rebate Calculator: Estimate Your Savings Fast
In early 2025, the Australian federal government officially launched the solar battery rebate, also known as the Cheaper Home Batteries Program.
This upfront discount offers approximately 30% off the cost, or a maximum of $372/usable kWh.
There’s never been a better time to switch to solar, as the rebate will decline annually until the scheme ends in 2030. So, how do you know if your home is eligible for the rebate? Here, we’ll break down the criteria for accessing the solar battery rebate and how you can calculate your savings easily with Volteam’s solar battery rebate calculator.
Why Buy a Solar Battery?
Solar panels are a great way to maximise the benefits of switching over to clean energy. Still, a solar battery may help you tap into the true potential of renewable energy. Here are a few reasons why:
- A solar battery allows you to store excess generated energy rather than exporting it at low feed-in tariffs.
- It ensures that during blackout periods, you will have power at home when you need it most, thereby establishing your independence regarding energy use.
- Being less dependent on the grid is more environmentally friendly, which in turn contributes to lowering your carbon footprint.
- And crucially, you’re future-proofing yourself for increasing energy costs.
If you’re unsure whether a solar system is right for you, our experts can help break it down. They’ll help you find out what will suit your needs based on your energy usage and patterns, recommend the best system and battery size and importantly, help you maximise your savings with any eligible rebates.
Who is Eligible for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program?
The federal battery rebate is on offer to homeowners (including both landlords and owner-occupied properties), community facilities, and small businesses.
Rebates are applied per property, and there’s no means test. This means that owners of qualifying properties can apply for a separate rebate on their battery system at each site, provided each site has its own electricity meter.
There are a few battery-specific system requirements that need to be adhered to for the cheaper home batteries program, including:
- Battery size ranges from 5 to 100 kWh nominal
- Must be a new battery
- Must be installed alongside a new or existing rooftop PV system at the same location
- Battery and inverter must be on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved list
- Supervised installation by a Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) technician
- Must comply with state/territory electrical safety guidelines
If you’re unsure whether you qualify, please get in touch with us today, and we’ll be happy to help assess your system for eligibility.
Can You Get a Rebate on Additional Solar Batteries?
The rebate can also be applied to adding additional batteries to your existing system if the following applies:
- The system has not received a federal rebate previously
- The added battery is at least 5kWh
- The total nominal capacity stays less than 100kWh
- New and existing batteries form a compliant system as approved by the CEC
- The system is re-certified by an SAA-accredited installer for safety and compliance
It’s important to be aware that electric vehicle (EV) batteries and EV charging systems are not eligible for this scheme.
How Much Can You Save with our Solar Battery Rebate Calculator?
Eligible batteries produce 9.3 Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) per usable kWh, with each certificate worth about $37, after transaction and administration costs. That means the expected rebate is set at $344/usable kWh. So how does that translate to your system?
The average Australian home can reap the benefits of solar with a 10 kWh battery. Costs are in the region of $11,120 and would generate a rebate of approximately $3,440, which means you would pay $7,680.
You can invest in your system now and cut your electricity bills by $700 to $1,500 every year, depending on your usage of electricity and the prevailing prices.
As we discussed above, the value of the STCs will be gradually reduced every year until 2030; therefore, the sooner you install your system, the more you’ll save.
Rebates and State Incentives
Alongside the federal Cheaper Homes Battery Program, you can combine the rebate with some state incentives to maximise your savings. However, this only applies to some regions/territories.
| State | Scheme/Incentive | Savings | Additional Information |
| Western Australia | Horizon Power Customers/Synergy Customers | Up to $3,800/$1,300 | Capped at 10 kWh. Requires participation in VPP with interest-free loans of up to $10,000 available |
| New South Wales | NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme | Up to $1,500 | VPP sign-up incentive |
| Victoria | Solar Battery Loan Program | N/A | Programme closed |
| Northern Territory | Home and Business Battery Scheme | N/A | Funding cap reached |

Understanding Solar Battery Rebate Savings
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program offers potential customers 30% off the upfront costs of installing a battery, making it an attractive time to invest. Increased electricity prices, decreased battery installation costs and lower solar feed-in tariffs mean that even without the national rebate program, switching to solar is becoming more accessible and affordable.
Given the short window for the rebate program and the year-on-year decrease in savings, it’s likely that demand for battery storage will only increase in the coming years. That’s why it’s crucial to act now to avoid potential supply shortages and installation delays.
